Tornado Days 40-89

July 27 – September 13, 2026

Day 40, Monday, July 27, 2026

The lumberjack was supposed to come over this morning to harvest five of our stressed trees, but it rained pretty hard this morning, so we postponed to later in the week, as it’s difficult for him to operate in the mud.

Day 41, Tuesday, July 28, 2026

It appears that our insurance adjuster has closed out our claim, without regard to the fact that it isn’t complete, we haven’t been paid our lodging and food expenses, and they still haven’t paid for a couple of personal items that were lost.  In addition, the adjustment is woefully inadequate for paying for repairs. We’re appealing again, but we can’t seem to get any traction with the adjuster, as he’s washed his hands of the whole thing at this point.  The insurance company will soon be hearing from attorneys.  This is likely to be another protracted battle.

Day 45, Saturday, August 1, 2026

This has been a dead week, with nothing being accomplished.  The lumberjack never showed up, and I haven’t heard from him since Monday, when he postponed because of the mud.  None of the promised cleanup of hanging soffits has happened, so we’re, basically, just languishing as time marches on.  It really is urgent to get the roof fixed and the shed repaired, but neither can happen until our disagreement with the insurance company is resolved.  Here we are, a month and a half out from the tornado, and we’re just spinning our wheels for repairs.

Day 51, Friday, August 7, 2026

I had a conversation today with our public adjuster.  It appears that the insurance company is reevaluating many of the claims from the tornado, as the intial adjustments were way off.  That fits our scenario so I hope that sometime in the next few days we’ll see another adjuster over here to do a more thorough evaluation.

Our roof remains tarped in several places because the initial adjustment only included repair of a partial roof.  We can’t move ahead on repairs to the roof and trusses until we get a revised adjustment from the insurance company.  So here we sit, 51 days in, with roof damage and nothing repaired thus far.

Day 54, Monday, August 10, 2026

A contractor was over today to finally remove the destroyed areas of the soffit and block it off with tarping so that critters can’t access the attic via that broken area.  I think that should be the last of the mitigation.  Now we are just waiting for a re-adjustment so that we can get the roof replaced.
